Historiografía, Filología Clásica Y Poder: Una Polémica De Mediados Del Siglo Xix Sobre ‘A History Of Greece’ De George Grote

Resumen


El objetivo de este artículo es explorar el debate generado tras la publicación de un panfleto de Richard Shilleto (1851), que se focalizó en algunos argumentos expuestos por George Grote en el volumen sexto de su A History of Greece (1849). Intentaremos mostrar aquí de qué forma y por qué la polémica reveló algunas disputas intelectuales que iban más allá del planteo de una simple dicotomía entre aceptación, o no, de la evidencia histórica tucididea sobre Cleón y los llamados demagogos atenienses. Argumentamos que la polémica mostró una serie de cuestiones centrales en el debate intelectual inglés de la época: la recepción política de la Atenas clásica, el juicio sobre la política contemporánea, el estatus histórico de los textos clásicos y el lugar de la historia antigua como disciplina académica, así como también para el imaginario del público general.
